New Mediator 73

This episode I talk about SXSW, the Buck Art Show, and the New Mediator comic. (click here to hear the Mp3) Friend and musician Josh Freda is going to SXSW with the documentary he scored. Rewind is a documentary about VHS and the culture the tapes spawned. I’m really proud of Josh and I can’t wait to see/hear the film. The 5th Annual Buck Art Show is March 3, 2013 at Main Street Highland Park. Each artist creates their entries with less than $10 worth of materials from The Buck Stops Here. You can submit your own work, applications are due March 1. Finally NewMediator.org is going to be putting out a web comic. As an artist and lifelong comic fan I thought it would be some fun content for the site.

Hope Ochanbop-Buickstone (http://h-o-b.bandcamp.com/) are Victor DiSilva and Philip J. Mellen, an experimental electronic band from Massachusetts. Our newest art show isn’t going to be an art show at all. The next project is going to be a sound art Mixtape (that link will send you over to our Kickstarter page). Instead of gathering work in a single gallery space we are going to bring the art show to you the “viewer”. Each of the artists is going to or has created a piece of sound art for the show that will be part of our Mixtape. {Mp3} You can listen to each of the pieces in their entirety on our Bandcamppage. If you like what you hear and you want to support the artists and me, then you can donate what you can to our Kickstarter. Our kickstarter is going to fund the production of the physical CD and cover artwork. Any funds left over will be given to the artists. About this project

The New York Art Residency and Studios (NARS) Foundation is delighted to announce the opening of Show Me Your Glands, a group exhibition curated by Tamara Johnson, winner of the 2012 annual NARS Emerging Curator Program Open Call. Ranging from sculpture and video to print and performance, the exhibition explores the concept of “inner ephemera” in search of expanding “the landscape of body, uncovering the existence of a corporeal gland residing below the surface of making.”

This episode focuses on some recent art doings, I would say news, but I think that implies to much credibility. I spent some time at the B. Beamesderfer Gallery for the opening of Marsha Goldberg’s new show. All but one of the pieces are part of a new drawing series.

The work focuses more on the act of writing her own kind of lost language. The work is more intimate than the paintings I’ve seen at Alfa Art Gallery. I even had a chance for a short chat with Marsha herself. You should all take a chance to go see this work for yourselves.

Death and Art:

Also in this episode we discuss the death of the Painter of Light, Thomas Kinkade and the final days of gallery and nonprofit Exit Art. Though these two things occupy totally different parts of the art world they are both on my mind. I do want to warn you that I worked at and interned at Exit Art so I am biased.

Michael paints historical events, mythology, and folk tales and paints them using traditional Renaissance techniques. Though his work seems to take inspiration from folk art, his figures are highly modeled, very detailed, and live in very richly painted landscapes. I love how his work was a mix of folk history and the sublime.
